Posso supporre che ci fosse in atto una "guerra" tra SF classica e cyberpunk: altri due candidati forti quell'anno erano di Gibson e Sterlling, e forse si volle evitare un altro trionfo dei "rivoluzionari".
Come quest'opera abbia potuto vincere il Premio Hugo nel 1989 è al di là delle mie capacità di comprensione. Si salvano un centinaio di pagine verso la metà e l'ultima cinquantina, altrimenti avrei azzardato anche 2 stelle. Saper scrivere non basta, se poi ci si perde in questo modo ingiustificabile. Da Cyteen si potrebbe tranquillamente ricavare un (discreto) romanzo da 300 pagine senza perdere assolutamente nulla di significativo peccato che invece l'originale si trascini disperatamente per 900, traboccando di ridondanti e piuttosto stucchevoli elucubrazioni psico-socio-politologiche. A tratti è stata un'agonia: un caso emblematico di verbosità totalmente fine a sè stessa. fatto sta che molto raramente ho fatto una fatica simile a leggere un romanzo di SF. Dopo aver letto con grande soddisfazione La lega dei mondi ribelli e soprattutto I 40000 di Gehenna, dal presunto capolavoro di C.J.Cherryh, unico suo romanzo vincitore di un Hugo, mi aspettavo davvero grandi cose.
